Strategic thinking and planning is the ability to analyze an organization’s current situation and its future goals, and to develop a comprehensive plan to achieve those goals. This capability involves understanding the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and using that understanding to develop and implement strategies that support the organization’s mission and vision. It also involves developing key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the success of the plan and adjusting the plan as needed to ensure continued success.

Beginner competence definition

At the beginner level, individuals understand the basics of strategic planning and its importance to the organization. They can participate in strategic planning discussions, contribute to the development of the organization’s mission and vision, and understand the organization’s internal and external environment. They are also able to develop basic SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analyses and assist in the development of key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of the plan.

Intermediate competence definition

At the intermediate level, individuals have a deeper understanding of the organization’s business model, competitive landscape, and market trends. They can develop and implement strategic plans that align with the organization’s mission and vision, and incorporate feedback from key stakeholders. They are able to identify and analyze risks and opportunities, develop contingency plans, and track and report on KPIs to measure the success of the plan. Intermediate professionals also have strong communication skills to effectively articulate the strategic plan to stakeholders and solicit their input and feedback.

Advanced competence definition

Advanced individuals have a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s business model, market trends, and competitive landscape, as well as a deep understanding of how the organization’s strategic plan fits within the broader industry landscape. They are able to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that are informed by data-driven analysis and stakeholder feedback. They can also manage complex, cross-functional teams and lead the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that align with the organization’s overall mission and vision. They can monitor and adjust the strategic plan as needed to ensure continued success, identify and manage risks and opportunities, and drive continuous improvement throughout the organization. They also have strong leadership and communication skills to effectively articulate the strategic plan to stakeholders and inspire and motivate cross-functional teams to achieve strategic goals.
