Ethical leadership is the ability to demonstrate and promote ethical behavior and values in oneself and others, and to integrate those values into the decision-making process of the organization. This capability involves modeling and communicating ethical principles and standards, creating a culture of integrity and accountability, and making ethical decisions that align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. It also involves fostering transparency and trust with stakeholders, and holding oneself and others accountable for ethical conduct.

Beginner competence definition

At the beginner level, professionals understand the basic principles of ethics and how they relate to the organization’s mission, vision, and values. They can identify and address ethical dilemmas, and develop basic strategies for promoting ethical behavior and values within the organization. They are able to recognize the importance of transparency and accountability, and understand the impact of unethical behavior on the organization’s reputation and success.

Intermediate competence definition

At the intermediate level, professionals have a deeper understanding of the complex ethical issues facing the organization, as well as the ability to develop and implement comprehensive ethical leadership strategies that align with the entity’s mission and values. Intermediate professionals are able to create a culture of ethics and accountability within the organization, and integrate ethical considerations into decision-making processes. They can also engage with stakeholders and communicate transparently and effectively about ethical issues.

Advanced competence definition

At the advanced level, professionals understand the ethical challenges facing the organization, as well as the ability to lead and manage ethical change within the organization. They can design and implement ethical leadership strategies that are aligned with the entity’s overall strategy, and measure and track the impact of those strategies on key performance indicators such as employee satisfaction, stakeholder trust, and organizational success. They can also effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, manage complex ethical dilemmas, and provide strategic advice and counsel to senior leaders on ethical issues. In our experience, they can also foster a culture of ethical excellence throughout the entity, acting as a role model for ethical behavior and values.
