Political acumen is the ability to navigate and understand the dynamics of an organization’s political landscape. This includes identifying key stakeholders, anticipating political obstacles and opportunities, and developing strategies to influence decision-making. It also involves building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, communicating effectively, and using political influence ethically and effectively.

Beginner competence definition

At the beginner level, individuals understand the basic principles of organizational politics and the company’s policies and programs related to political acumen. They are able to identify key stakeholders, understand their interests and motivations, and communicate effectively with them using established communication channels.

Intermediate competence definition

At the intermediate level, individuals have a deeper understanding of organizational politics and the ability to navigate complex political environments. They are able to anticipate political obstacles and opportunities, develop strategies to influence decision-making, and build and maintain relationships with stakeholders. They can also coach others on political acumen strategies and policies.

Advanced competence definition

At the advanced level, individuals have a comprehensive understanding of organizational politics and its application in complex, global organizations. They are able to design and implement political acumen programs that align with the company’s overall business goals and values, identify and analyze stakeholder interests and motivations, and develop and implement strategies that achieve mutual benefits. They can use advanced techniques such as stakeholder mapping, social listening, and sentiment analysis to inform political acumen strategies. They also have strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams to achieve political acumen goals and drive continuous improvement throughout the organization. They can use political influence ethically and effectively, and can manage conflicts and crises in politically sensitive situations.
